PROJECTS

Reconciliation and social responsibility through creative engagement as a change initiator in B&H is the thing that inspires us. By using art as a means of fighting for a better future of our communities and the whole country, we are searching for different models to promote our ideas. A society without divides is the only one capable of creating a better future.

REGENERATION

A USAID project ReGeneration which started in May 2017, and which is being implemented by the International Republican Institute (IRI) in B&H in partnership with Magacin Kabare, gathered 200 young people from 10 municipalities (Jajce, Stolac, Gornji Vakuf/Uskoplje, Doboj, Brčko, Drvar, Zvornik, Prijedor, Sanski Most, and Kotor Varoš) in B&H. These young people being agents of social change in the country became the carriers of advocating reconciliation and understanding in their local communities and beyond. The project officially started 11 May 2017 and will last until 10 May 2019.

The introductory part of the project involved the Youth Summit. Utilizing workshops and interactive lectures, the Summit’s goal was to empower the participants providing them with new skills that would enable them to efficiently advocate youth issues which arise from discrimination, nationalism, and segregation within their communities. Following the Summit, 10 young people were selected to be Reconciliation ambassadors. The Ambassadors worked with Magacin Kabare’s team in acquiring skills that enabled them to create a documentary film. They filmed the visits to the municipalities involved in the project, their encounters with the local inhabitants, visits to the places where horrific sufferings took place, as well as their personal experience through different stages of the project.

IN PURSUIT OF RESEMBLANCE

Magacin Kabare, with the assistance of the US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ministry of Culture and Sports-Canton Sarajevo, Ministry of Culture and Sports of FBiH and the Jolie- Pitt Foundation initiated a project called “Seeking similarities”. The towns that were included in the project were Doboj – Jug, Sanski Most, Ljubuški, Tomislavgrad, Lopare, and Ribnik.

Postwar society in Bosnia and Herzegovina is still based on strong ethnic divisions which are reflected in the educational and cultural spheres of our society. Every ethnic group has the legal right to share their history and pass on their language and culture to their children. However, we believe that this right shouldn’t shadow the possibility where young people in B&H, apart from their individual and ethnic identity, should be aware of the collective identity, and shared culture, and heritage of all the ethnic groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We chose Sarajevo as the place where most of the project activities were conducted because it’s the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina and most of the young people have never or will never have the opportunity to visit due to the current political situation. Visiting Sarajevo was a unique opportunity to get to know the cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina and also to present their community and its heritage in the capital city of their homeland, which is a rare opportunity.

CHILDREN OF PEACE

Magacin Kabare, with the help of the US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, initiated a project in April 2015 called Children of Peace, dedicated to young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the generations born after reaching the Dayton Peace Agreement. This multimedia project, under the leadership of director Emir Kapetanović, gathered young people from 6 towns and cities (Tomislavgrad, Mostar, Srebrenica, Zvornik, Sarajevo, and Bijeljina).

Together with the workshops manager and guest educators, they talked about everyday life, and thorough their own viewpoints gave opinions about their lives, their cities, and country in the future. The entire project consisted of a multimedia artist Bojan Stojčić’s exhibition called Words and Cities, the performance of the young participants Radoš, Nina, Ivona, Marko, Nataša and Zorica and the filming of the feature-length documentary by Emir Kapetanović which portrays the first generation of children born in peace.

SIT DOWN COMEDIAN

Sit down Comedian is a project which was carried out with the help of the US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Foundation for music, performing arts and fine arts in Sarajevo. Its goal was not only to promote stand-up comedy but also to raise awareness of the inaccessibility of institutions of culture to disabled people. Sit down Comedian visited 9 cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Bihać, Mostar, Trebinje, Livno, Brčko, Bijeljina, and Tuzla) where stand-up comedy workshops were held.

PATRIOT

Patriot is a multimedia project and a web series based on the musical Jedinac, which deals with discrimination in our society in a comic way and uses cabaret form of theatrical expression. The project was conducted with the help of experts in the fields Magacin Kabare talks about through seven webisodes which were presented to the audience from 15- 21 December. It was called 7 days of Magacin Kabare against discrimination. Each episode deals with different types of discrimination such as discrimination against women, members of the LGBTQ population, race or religious discrimination etc. that leads to violence which is a major problem in our society.

ŠERET

Šeret is a competition of stand-up comedians. This was the first ever organized competition in Bosnia and Herzegovina by Magacin Kabare. Šeret had a huge impact on promoting stand-up comedy in our country and it drew attention to many fabulous comedians no one knew about until then. Šeret had two seasons and comedians from the entire B&H applied. The second season was available via live stream thanks to our partner Klix.ba, the most visited web portal in B&H.
